“I created BCS because capable construction SMEs can be held back by uncertainty around what bigger opportunities actually require.
The aim is simple: help them understand where they stand, what matters next and what can wait — before they spend time or money in the wrong places.”
Duncan McGillivray
Bigger work can bring different expectations
Often, the challenge is not the work itself.
It is showing a larger buyer the business around the work — your experience, evidence, business foundations, competence and health & safety arrangements, procurement readiness and how clearly you can present what you already do.
You do not need to have everything perfect before you start.
The difficult part is often knowing what actually matters for the kind of work you want to move towards.
That is where BCS helps.
Don’t fix everything. Find out what matters.
You could spend weeks trying to work out what larger buyers may expect.
You could start paying for different kinds of support before you are even clear which issues genuinely need attention.
BCS is designed to give you the clarity first.
We help you establish:
what your business can already demonstrate;
where you are trying to get to;
what actually matters for that direction;
what needs attention now;
what can wait;
and where your time, effort or money is best focused next.
The aim is simple: understand the position before you start trying to fix everything.
That means you can make better decisions about what to handle yourself, where specialist input may be needed and where BCS support could genuinely help.
Start with an enquiry.
Tell us a little about your business, the kind of work or buyer you are considering, and where you need clarity.
For an initial enquiry:
keep it brief;
use business contact details;
do not attach customer files or sensitive personal information;
BCS will confirm any appropriate next step separately.
This website is for information and enquiries. It does not accept orders, payments or customer evidence.
Please wait for BCS to confirm an agreed scope and appropriate information route before sending Review evidence.
Professional enough to trust. Comfortable enough to ask for help. Clear enough to know what happens next.
You do not need to know every procurement term. You do not need to have every document perfectly organised. And you do not need to pretend you are further along than you really are. BCS is here to help you understand the position clearly, focus on what matters and make a more informed decision about what to do next.
Want a proper assessment of your position?
Commercial Readiness Review
A clear view of where you are, what you can demonstrate, and what needs to happen next.
The Commercial Readiness Review is BCS’s core Review for contractors looking towards larger work.
It is designed to help you understand the position before you spend significant time or money acting on assumptions about what needs fixing.
It can start from different places.
The point is not to force every contractor into the same template.
The question is not “Are you ready?” It is “Ready for what?” The Review then gives you the clearest supported view of where you stand against that direction.
If you have a specific buyer or opportunity
BCS can assess your current position against the relevant requirements that are actually available.
If you know the type of work, buyer or market you want
BCS can build a relevant market benchmark and assess how your current business and evidence stand against it.
If you know you want bigger work but are not yet sure which route makes the most sense
BCS can use your current business, demonstrated work and available evidence to identify plausible next-step routes, compare the important differences and help make the direction clearer.
What you get from the Review
1. A route built around where you are actually trying to go
Specific buyer, defined market or still working out the best direction — the Review starts from the position you are genuinely in.
2. An evidence-based assessment, not a generic score
BCS looks at the information and evidence available, applies the right benchmark and separates what is established, indicated and still unknown.
3. A clear view of what is already working
Useful experience, evidence and business foundations are identified so you can build from what you already have.
4. The material gaps and uncertainty that actually matter
The Review focuses on the issues that could affect the direction you are pursuing, rather than producing a long list of everything a business could possibly improve.
5. A prioritised action plan
You see what needs attention now, what can wait and what may matter later in the procurement journey.
6. A written Commercial Readiness Review you can actually use
You receive the supported overall position, material findings, readiness by area and clear next steps in one professional customer document.
The Review is
£199
The price is clear from the outset — with no hidden consultation fee before you can find out what the Review costs.
No pressure afterwards. If the Review gives you the clarity and direction you need to move forward, you take it from there. If you decide you would like BCS to stay involved, we are here to help.
Use BCS as much — or as little — as you need.
Take the Review and move forward with confidence
If the Review gives you the clarity, structure and direction you need to move forward on your own, that is a good outcome. You may find that is all the assistance you need from BCS.
Keep BCS involved where it would genuinely help
If you would rather have support turning the findings into action, BCS can stay involved and shape the next step around what the Review actually identifies.
Support only where it adds value
BCS is here to help you get to the point where you know what to do next — whether that means continuing with us or confidently taking it forward yourself.
Behind the Review is a structured BCS assessment engine
Your Review is not based on a quick impression or a made-up percentage score.
BCS uses a structured internal Review engine to organise the information and evidence available, establish the right benchmark for the direction being considered, and separate:
what is genuinely established;
what the available information indicates;
what remains unknown;
what materially needs attention;
what matters now and what may matter later.
That structure is then turned into a clear written Review and a prioritised action plan.
The rigour stays behind the scenes. The customer experience stays clear.
You do not need to build a special evidence pack for BCS
You don’t need to reorganise everything or work out what matters before sending it. Upload the information and evidence you already hold to your secure BCS folder. We’ll organise it, assess what is relevant to the Review and establish what it supports. BCS assesses the material it actually receives. Where the available information does not establish a position, the Review records that uncertainty rather than automatically treating missing evidence as proof that the business lacks the capability.
How the Review works
1. Tell us your Starting Point
Tell us where your business is now, the type of work or opportunity you want to move towards, and what you want the Review to help you understand.
You do not need to have everything worked out before you start.
2. Upload what you already have
Once we receive your Starting Point, BCS will provide your secure upload link.
Send us the business information and evidence you already hold. You do not need to reorganise everything or decide what is relevant before sending it — BCS will do the sorting and assessment.
When you have finished supplying the evidence you want us to consider, email BCS to confirm that you are ready for the Review to begin.
3. BCS carries out the Review
Once you confirm that your evidence submission is complete, BCS begins the Review.
We research the direction, buyer or opportunity where relevant, organise and assess the information you have supplied, establish what your evidence supports, identify material gaps or uncertainties, and determine what needs attention now and what can wait.
The normal maximum turnaround is within 7 working days from your confirmation that you are ready for the Review to begin, and may be sooner where capacity allows.
4. Receive your written Review
You receive a clear written Commercial Readiness Review setting out where your business currently stands, what is already working in your favour, the material gaps or uncertainties identified, and a prioritised pathway for what to do next.
Where specialist input is genuinely required, the Review will make that clear without pretending BCS is the specialist that should deliver it.
Normal turnaround
Once we receive your Starting Point, we’ll provide your secure BCS upload link so you can add the information and evidence you want us to consider. When you’ve finished supplying your evidence, email BCS to let us know you’re ready for the Review to begin. From that point, the normal maximum turnaround is within 7 working days — and may be sooner where capacity allows.
You decide when your evidence submission is complete. The Review starts from your explicit email confirmation.
Clarity you can actually act on
The final Review is designed to give you a clear, usable commercial picture rather than a generic score.
It typically includes:
1. What we assessed
The target, route, stage and benchmark used.
2. Your overall position
The clearest supported answer BCS can give about the current position.
3. What is already working
Relevant experience, useful evidence and operating foundations you can build on.
4. Your readiness by area
A clear outcome and explanation for each commercial area assessed.
5. Material findings
The issues that genuinely matter, why they matter and what needs to happen.
6. Prioritised action plan
What to focus on now, what can wait, and what should be in place before later procurement stages.
7. Basis and limitations
A transparent record of what the Review is based on, what remains unknown and where specialist confirmation may be required.
See a specimen Review
Want to see what a completed Commercial Readiness Review looks like? Email BCS and we’ll send you our illustrative specimen Review. The business, buyer opportunity and evidence in the specimen are fictional. It is not a real client case study, testimonial or guarantee of any outcome.
Trust and boundaries
The Review is designed to give you a clear, supportable commercial position and a practical way forward.
BCS separates what the available evidence establishes, what it indicates and what remains unknown. Missing evidence is recorded as uncertainty — not automatically treated as proof that the underlying capability is absent.
Where the Review identifies factors that could strengthen your position, it explains why they matter and helps you prioritise what is worth addressing first.
BCS does not certify technical or trade competence, legal or regulatory compliance, health & safety compliance, insurance adequacy or financial standing. Where specialist confirmation is needed, the Review identifies it clearly.
The Commercial Readiness Review is an assessment, not a certificate or guarantee of buyer acceptance, supplier approval, tender invitation or contract award.
The Review is complete in itself. You do not need to buy another BCS service afterwards. If another step would be more useful before a Review, BCS will say so.
Start with clarity. Go as far as you need.
Begin with an enquiry
Discuss your situation with BCS before deciding whether a Review is appropriate.
Move into the Commercial Readiness Review when a proper assessment makes sense
BCS looks at the business, the evidence available and the route you are considering, then gives you a supported position and prioritised next steps.
Put selected next steps into practice
Where the Review identifies work BCS can appropriately support, you can choose separately scoped Readiness Build support. You can also take the plan forward yourself or use advisers and specialists you already trust. The choice stays with you.
Who is the Commercial Readiness Review for?
The Review is designed for construction contractors who are considering a step up. It may be useful if you are:
• looking towards larger contracts or customers;
• approaching a main contractor or more structured buyer;
• preparing for supplier onboarding or formal procurement;
• unsure how well your existing experience and evidence will stand up;
• trying to understand which gaps genuinely matter before spending money fixing everything;
• clear that you want bigger work but not yet certain which route deserves your focus.
You do not need to have a live tender in front of you before a Review can be useful.
